'Payment by Results' - Opportunity or Threat?

The introduction of 'Payment by Results' (PbR) has provided Acute Trusts with the opportunity to optimise their revenue and their service delivery by reimbursing them on a case-by-case basis for the work they do. This is both an opportunity and a threat; an opportunity to be rewarded for efficiency but a threat due to the need to manage expenditure within National Tariff prices, avoiding potential 'under-funding' or cashflow problems.

Audit Commission chair James Strachan has warned that NHS Trusts need to improve their financial management if the NHS is to benefit from the additional funds being allocated until 2008.
