We are pleased to be part of South Tyneside NHS Trust's strategy
to improve performance and prepare for foundation status.
South Tyneside's chief executive, Lorraine Lambert, sponsored
a major initiative to incorporate business intelligence into
electronic care records systems to provide managers and clinicians
with optimal information to manage services.
The Commission for Health Improvement (CHI) singled out the
use of information to support clinical governance as a key
issue for assessing Trust star ratings performance. Improvements
in access to high quality information, provided by Cognos
Business Intelligence solutions, play a pivotal role in the
Trust's information governance strategy, contributing to the
Trust regaining its three star status in 2003.
"It is the breadth of access to management information,
and the resulting ability to change information into knowledge
that supports the decision-making process, that is so impressive.
Cognos Metrics Manager gives us the corporate view of our
operations, while PowerPlay and Impromptu provide direct drill
through to operational data that managers need to deliver
effective services," said Mike Robson, executive director
of corporate governance at South Tyneside NHS Trust.
Martin Alexander, head of information services at the Trust
added, "A primary issue for us is providing access to
good quality information. You can have the best operational
system in the world, but if you can't get access to your information,
how can you be sure it is being used correctly? We chose Cognos
because of its excellent Web functionality and its simple
end-user interface. With minimal training, our managers have
access to a huge mine of operational data. For us, Business
Intelligence is about providing better services and being
more efficient. Central
to this project's success has been our close relationship
with Bidetime who helped us tailor the software to address
our specific requirements."
"Achieving three star status is currently a priority
for all NHS Trusts. South Tyneside and Gateshead NHS Trusts
are leading the way in the use of BI to improve performance
to achieve these stringent targets. There is no reason whythe
software we have developed in conjunction with Bidetime can't
be replicated across the health service, so this is a tremendous
opportunity for both companies," said Graham Walter,
vice-president of Cognos UK, Middle East and South Africa,
EBI.
