Cardiff and Vale NHS Trust has invested in Cognos to help
clinical and managerial staff manage their workload and make
better decisions.
The solution, implemented by Cognos partner Bidetime, ensures
that staff have improved access to better quality information.
It has been designed to suit a range of needs from the CEO
to the clinician, allowing them to intuitively create queries
and analysis to match their individual requirements.
Data is now held in Bidetime's 'Intelligent Warehouse', a
central repository which has been designed to scale to accommodate
data from multiple systems and over different time periods.
With no need for IT skills, staff can access automatically
produced routine reports as well as perform fast manipulation
of data for ad-hoc analysis and enquiries. Information provided
includes referrals, waiting lists and times and consultant-based
activity as well as information for clinical audit and governance.
Cardiff & Vale NHS Trust, which is one of the largest
Trusts in the NHS and includes the University Hospital of
Wales, instigated the project following the merger of four
previous Trusts which all used a range of different IT systems.
Previously, the Trust relied on more traditional information
systems, which were spread across local IT systems rather
than being held centrally. Much of the data collection and
analysis had to be done manually which was a time consuming
process for both users and the central information department.
The software deployed includes Cognos Metrics Manager, Cognos
PowerPlay, Cognos Impromptu and Bidetime's Intelligent Data
Warehouse. It is currently being used by 50 clinical, information
and management staff within Cardiff and Vale NHS Trust.
"The Cognos technology gives staff at all levels within
the Trust access to relevant and up-to-date information to
enable them to operate as effectively as possible," said
Andrew Goodall, Head of Performance Improvement at Cardiff
and Vale NHS Trust. "The major driver behind the project
was to ensure that crucial operational information is available
to everyone who needs it - not just IT experts."
"Cardiff and Vale is giving both medical and management
staff fast, reliable access to the information they need to
do their jobs," said Graham Walter, vice-president of
Cognos UK, Middle East and South Africa. "Our technology
will also help the Trust to meet modern and effective performance
management and clinical governance agendas."
